Can you fly with a sports bag in cabin baggage?

When you travel by plane, you are generally allowed to take a certain amount of checked baggage. It very often happens that passengers also wish to keep baggage in the cabin in order to keep with them papers, their plane ticket, valuable personal effects or those that are too fragile to travel in hold baggage. As space is limited, cabin baggage is subject to very strict regulations. If a sports bag is allowed in the cabin, it must, like any other, respect the constraints established by the airlines. It is important to carefully check that your men’s sports bag or your backpack complies with the size and weight limits, otherwise you risk being turned away when boarding and having to transport your belongings in the hold.

Cabin baggage regulations

Taking a carry-on duffel bag on the plane requires you to do a few checks beforehand. Indeed, since space in the cabin is very limited, airlines cannot afford to let passengers take on just any baggage. It is of course a question of comfort, but also and above all of safety. Handbags, bags containing a computer, camera bags or cabin suitcases are accepted under certain conditions. The same goes for sports bags and backpacks.

While airlines may have different rules, the following restrictions are commonly put in place.

Respect of the maximum weight

The weight of baggage allowed in the cabin is generally limited to 7 to 12 kilograms. So be very careful about what you put in your sports bag to take the plane. This may seem like a lot but you will quickly realize that it is very easy to get to the maximum weight allowed.

Weigh your sports bag once it is full, and if you exceed the allowed weight, try to remove the excess (there is always some) to place it in baggage that will travel in the hold.

Respect of maximum dimensions

In addition to weight, the volume occupied by your cabin baggage is limited. The maximum dimensions currently authorized are 55 x 40 x 35 cm. Be careful again, these dimensions vary slightly depending on the airline. It only takes a few centimeters for you not to be able to keep your baggage in the cabin and for it to go into the hold. The advantage of a sports bag for traveling by plane is that unlike a rigid suitcase, it can pack down a little if it is not too full. To be sure that your backpack is allowed in the cabin, limit yourself to a flexible model with a capacity of less than or equal to 40 liters, such as the Smartbag40 from Karkoa.

Items prohibited in the cabin

Whether you’re using a gym bag or a backpack, there are a number of items that are strictly prohibited in carry-on baggage.

All liquids placed in a container of more than 100 ml are prohibited in the cabin, with the exception of medications essential to your health (please keep your prescription up to date with you).

Medicines are allowed in the cabin, provided they are necessary for you and correspond to the duration of the flight. Also find out before you leave. A medicine authorized in France may be illegal in your country of arrival, such as certain codeine-based treatments.

Sharp or pointed objects are strictly prohibited. So forget about nail clippers, nail files, razors or scissors. They will have to travel under guard, in the hold. Pointed umbrellas, lighters, tools (hammer, saw, etc.) and naturally firearms, even fake ones, are completely prohibited.

Small sports equipment (deflated ball, mask, snorkel, etc.) are allowed in the cabin as long as they fit in your sports bag. All other accessories (golf clubs, tennis rackets, martial arts equipment, etc.) must be placed in checked baggage.

In any case, even if your cabin baggage complies with these rules, check directly with the airline you are traveling on to verify that it does not apply any particular restrictions before packing your bags.

Take your sports bag in the cabin

Using your sports bag to travel by plane is often more practical than taking a suitcase in the cabin. More flexible, it will be easier to store in a luggage compartment.

If you opt for a compartmentalized sports backpack like the Smartbag 40, compatible with airplane cabins, you will have at your disposal a whole set of pockets which will allow you to separate your different belongings for optimal use of the volume.

Equipped with a computer compartment, you can take with you a laptop up to 15.6 inches or a thick A4 format folder. You can store your laundry in the appropriate compartment and take advantage of the interior pockets to place small objects. This will keep your phone, keys, papers, official documents and plane tickets close at hand. The dividers between the compartments are removable, so you can save even more space. The space thus saved in the shoe compartment can, for example, be used to store additional clothes.

Using a duffel bag when flying has a number of advantages over a carry-on suitcase.

  • Thanks to its numerous compartments, you can distribute your various belongings so that you can easily access them without having to open your bag and rummage through your belongings. You will then have everything you need on hand in the blink of an eye.
  • A backpack or sports bag is also more flexible and you will undoubtedly have less difficulty finding a place for it in a compartment.
  • Finally, backpacks or sports bags worn over the shoulder are much more practical to carry than a carry-on suitcase, especially if you have to run after a connection at the airport.
