Blue card handball: the new card to encourage fair play

In recent years, handball fans have seen a new card in the hands of referees: the blue card.

Summary :

Why a blue card in handball?

The blue card complements the red and yellow cards, with the aim of further regulating the sport and fair play, to avoid excesses on the pitch.

Until 2016, refereeing in handball was based on three levels. Some of the most common and least serious offences, such as the free throw or the 7-metre throw, were punished in play. In the event of a more violent or serious offence, the referee could issue a yellow card as a warning, or a red card to send a player off.

The disadvantage was that, although the player was sent off, he was not always punished sufficiently for the offence committed.

What’s new in blue cardboard

From now on, in the event of inappropriate behaviour, the referee may, in addition to the red card, use a blue card against a player. What’s more, a disciplinary report will be drawn up against the player, leading to more radical measures aimed at preventing unnecessary outbursts on the handball pitch.
