Why does the winner of the Tour de France wear a yellow jersey?

Symbolising 1st place, the yellow jersey is the goal of every cyclist. But why this colour and not another? Here are some explanations.

Born in 1903, the Tour de France has seen many winners. But how could you tell who had won 1st place when they were mixed in with the rest of the riders? In 1919, the media asked the organisers to assign a colour to the winner’s jersey.

Henri Desgranges and Géo Lefèvre chose yellow. The colour of the pages of the daily sports newspaper l’Auto, which was organising the Tour at the time.

That’s why the jersey is yellow!
