What to put in a nursery pool bag for the swim 1 cycle?

At nursery school, children are still small, but they can already learn to swim. However, this is just a way of familiarising them with the water, not real swimming lessons. Find out more below about the swimming cycle 1 programme for nursery pupils, as well as the essential contents of the child’s pool bag (in addition to a swimming costume!).

Swimming cycle 1 for nursery pupils

Nursery pupils are in cycle 1 and the French Education Nationale defines a precise programme as part of learning to swim. The lessons have two main objectives:

  • enable each child to feel at ease in the water by familiarising them with the aquatic environment.
  • enable each child to develop their psychomotor skills through various activities.

Several concepts must be acquired by the end of the school swimming cycle 1. These are taught to children throughout the school year and include mastery of balance, propulsion, breathing and emotions.
Thus, the child will learn to:

  • balance in the water, using their limbs, with or without support;
  • move in the water, using a wall for around fifteen metres, then around thirty metres ;
  • go underwater apnea and blow air into the water with the mouth;
  • catch an object underwater, first at shallow depths, then deeper;
  • open their eyes in the water and enjoy the swimming activity.

Each lesson given is in small groups for one class. As for the pedagogical organisation, a qualified professional and two approved adults must always be present to ensure the smooth running of the activities as well as the safety of the children.

Contents of the nursery pool bag

School swimming often takes place outside the school, and children need to have a number of essential items in their rucksack for the pool. It’s a good idea to prepare the rucksack the day before lessons so as not to forget anything, or to draw up a list of things to take with you.

Here’s a list of what a kindergarten child’s pool bag should contain for their swimming activity:

  • a swimming costume, which he will put on once at the pool;
  • a swimming cap, which will protect the hair from chlorine;
  • swim goggles, essential to protect the eyes from chlorine;
  • pool sandals, to avoid slipping;
  • a towel to dry off after the shower;
  • a soap and shampoo to wash himself.

Dress your child in a practical way, so that they can change easily. After all, you won’t be there to help him and he’ll have to manage on his own. It’s also a good idea to pack a small snack in the pool bag, because once the lessons are over, the child will be hungry, as the pool has taken up a lot of their energy.

To conclude the nursery swimming pool cycle

By learning to swim from primary school onwards, children learn to tame the water, gain self-confidence and integrate socially thanks to the collective life at the pool.
