What to pack in a GS CP swimming pool bag as well as a swimming costume and swimming cap?

Learning to swim at primary school enables pupils to develop their self-confidence and feel at ease in the water.

In this article, you will discover the content of the swimming programme laid down by the French Education Nationale for pupils in cycle 2. You’ll also find out everything a CP pupil’s swimming backpack should contain for a swimming session.

To find out what to put in the GS nursery swimming bag, please refer to our guide on this subject.

Swimming cycle 2 for CP/CE1 pupils

As well as developing children’s independence and motor skills, pool sessions also allow them to socialise with other pupils.

Ultimately, the programme calls for pupils to acquire certain concepts relating to entering the water, immersion and movement.

  • For entering the water, pupils must be independent and be able to slide off a floating mat or jump upright without any assistance.
  • For immersion, pupils must be able to pass under or through weighted objects such as an immersed hoop and be able to remain balanced with their head vertical. They must also pick up objects at medium depth and then move these objects from point A to point B.
  • For movement, the student must know how to stay in place, balanced and without plantar support. Next, he must know how to move in the prone or dorsal position using a plank. They must also learn to move around 8 metres unaided, on their stomach or on their back.

To accompany the pupils, there must be a person in charge of the activity who will be the main person involved, as well as an approved adult who is a professional providing technical skills. Other volunteers may also be involved to help organise and set up the activity.

The contents of the primary school swimming pool bag

The contents of a swimming pool bag for a child in primary school remain the same whatever the cycle. For the water, they need a suitable swimming costume and a swimming cap. Goggles are also advisable to protect their eyes and allow them to open in the water. As children are often active, non-slip swimming shoes are essential to prevent them slipping at the poolside.

In terms of hygiene, soap and shampoo are ideal for washing. A towel that absorbs water well is essential to allow the child to dry off properly. You’ll also need a change of warm clothes, as the temperature outside the pool may not be the same.

Other materials used for the activity, such as floating objects, are already provided by the establishment hosting the sessions. Finally, ideally, the child’s bag should be watertight, so that they don’t get all their belongings wet inside.

To conclude the CP CE1 swimming programme

By the end of the swimming 2 cycle programme, pupils will be able to move independently in medium-depth water over a distance of at least 15 metres. Their motor responses will improve and they will feel more confident in the water.
