What’s the origin of the expression “staying on the sidelines”?

“Spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs…” No connection. “Glass, tartan…” No connection either! We owe this expression to sport, judge for yourself!

Summary :

This expression comes from a French sport, perhaps afterwork in its day: jeu de paume. In vogue in the 16th century, it brought together 7,000 players in Paris! In paume, as in tennis, some players would throw themselves to pick up a ball that was far away. Sometimes, however, their enthusiasm wasn’t enough, and the ball continued on its way, as did the player… He fell and ended up on the ground, on the… diamond!

The paume court was made up of small tiles!
