Rain protection for urban bikes

When you cycle in an urban environment, it’s not unusual to have to deal with bad weather. If you get caught in a downpour on the way home from work, it’s no big deal. You can easily change when you get home. The other way round, however, is more problematic. Arriving at work completely soaked is a real problem. Not to mention your work clothes. A computer generally doesn’t take kindly to damp, and neither do your files. With the right equipment, you can protect yourself and your belongings from the elements. A little forethought and a small investment can greatly improve your cycle trips.

Protecting the contents of your velotaf bag

The contents of your velotaf backpack are precious. That’s why, when it rains, it’s important to protect it properly. Although Karkoa backpacks are extremely hard-wearing, they are not made from waterproof material. The high-density polyester fabric used is highly resistant and water-repellent. This means that water will run off it in the form of droplets without soaking the fabric. Your bag will therefore easily withstand light showers, but never heavy rain. In the latter case, the water will always end up seeping through.

To combat bad weather while cycling and protect your belongings effectively, the Karkoa models have an ideal companion: the rain cover for rucksacks. The Rain Cover fits the Karkoa Nomad 25 and Smartbag 40 backpacks. Made from polyurethane-treated fabric, it will protect your backpack from the elements and dust.

Protecting your clothes

When cycling, it’s essential to have the right protection against the rain.

Waterproof jacket

If you’re thinking of a bright, waterproof jacket (never forget that in bad weather, a cyclist is even less visible than in normal conditions) and possibly overpants, you mustn’t forget the extremities either.

Pair of gloves

A pair of gloves, not necessarily very thick but sufficiently waterproof to protect your hands from the cold, can be very useful.

Helmet protection

You should also consider a rain cover for your helmet. While it’s effective in protecting you from an impact, don’t forget that it’s also ventilated and therefore ineffective against heavy rain. Get yourself a protective cover. It’s easy to slip over your helmet, and all you have to do is keep it in a pocket and take it out if it rains.

Overshoes

Finally, don’t forget your overshoes. No matter how good your shoes are, if the weather is bad enough over a long stretch of road, water will eventually seep through. With damp shoes, you’ll cool down more quickly despite the physical effort and you risk getting sick. A pair of overshoes will protect your feet. Some high-top models can even protect your ankle, preventing wet trousers or overtrousers from transferring moisture to your legs.
